What to expect in a class with Sonya
Welcoming students of all ages and abilities, Sonya's classes flow from seated meditations and breath work, to warm-ups and asanas. Sonya's style of teaching has been influenced by teachers from Hatha, Flow, Kripalu, Iyengar and Vinyasa traditions. She encourages her students to modify their practice and to listen to their body and breath as they move through the poses. She enjoys singing mantras at the end of her classes - just before the final "Om".
Sonya completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in Mexico in 2007 through Moksana Yoga Studio located in Victoria, British Columbia. Jules Payne was the wonderfully patient and knowledgeable teacher. Jules is now a co-owner of Ajna Yoga in Victoria, British Columbia. Sonya was the only student from the US studying in Mexico with eight Canadians. Listening to the Canadian accents was delightful! The one-month intensive yoga training was an adventure complete with geckos in the bedrooms (and an occasional iguana) and anatomy lessons and downward-facing dogs on the third floor patio.
In 2010, Sonya completed a Children’s yoga training through ChildLight Yoga, Dover, NH.
Sonya completed Reiki I, II, and Advanced Reiki training with Lourdes Gray through the John Harvey Gray Center for Reiki Healing.
Sonya completed Judith Hanson Lasater's, Relax and Renew Restorative Yoga training at Kripalu in 2015.
Sonya enjoys teaching and going to yoga classes, swimming, kayaking, camping, stand-up paddle boarding and spending time with her grandchildren - watching them play soccer, softball, basketball, baseball and perform in band and chorus concerts. She and her husband live in Canaan, NH.
We asked Sonya
Why do you practice yoga?
On the days I want to feel good, I practice yoga. I want to feel good every day! The balance and awareness that yoga provides - both on and off the mat - help to keep me grounded and centered - most of the time ; )
What fuels you?
Quiet days, herbal teas, time spent with family and friends, walking on sandy beaches, swimming in lakes and oceans, hiking... anything outdoors, even raking leaves!
Sonya's favorite piece of wisdom:
"Smile, breathe and go slowly."
