Mighty Yogi of the Month: May 2016

HI, I'M HANNAH AND THIS IS HOW I KICK ASANA!

Name: Hannah Wilhelm

Occupation: Student (and Mighty Desk Staffer!)

Favorite yoga pose: Pyramid Pose (Parsvottanasana)

Yoga is... very challenging, and rewarding, too!

What do you love most about yoga? Being part of a community of people who practice. Although we all do this for many different reasons and in many different ways, there is a beautiful sense of connection about it.

What fuels you? Spending time in nature or with animals (including people), the desire to serve others, and the struggle to learn. Also, kale!

My NONguilty pleasure is... playing with my family's dogs.

What makes you Mighty? Curiosity and persistence.

What’s your yoga story? How did you start practicing? My sister and I found a yoga book in my neighbor's basement, and our neighbor gave it to us. We looked at the pictures and copied the poses. Around the same time, I also did a project on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali for global history class, and I've been interested in yoga ever since then, sometimes practicing sporadically, sometimes more often. When I moved back to Ithaca about a year and a half ago, taking the Living Yoga course with Zainab and Gina helped me re-commit to a more regular practice.

If you had a superpower what would it be and why? I would be able to make fertile soil and beautiful plants appear instantly, to decorate cities, glum indoor spaces, and roadsides, and to give people food and mental peace.

When I wake up in the morning, I always do these two things... breathe and observe.

What's the best advice you've ever received? Stop trying to plan and anticipate everything, and have confidence that you'll be able to handle what the future brings.
