Mighty Yogi of the Month: January 2017

HI, I'M HANNAH AND THIS IS HOW I KICK ASANA!

Name: Hannah Swegarden

Favorite yoga pose: Revolved Triangle...it's one part of the practice that helps me twist out all sorts of bad energy, stretch the whole body, and, at the same time, makes me feel like I'm weaving through museum security laser lights.

Yoga is...a companion.

How do you serve the world?
I'm passionate about connecting people with the natural world, including each other!  I'm currently a student of horticulture trying to contribute to a more resilient food system, and I believe that people (and all their passions) are an intricate part of that!

What do you love most about your yoga practice?
I love that during practice, I only need to exist within a twelve square-foot space; the rest of the world can do its own thing while I'm on my mat.

What fuels you?
Hearing people laugh...especially those super deep, belly-laugh kind of laughs.

My NON-guilty pleasure is... giving my roommate's dog an extra treat now-and-then.

What makes you Mighty?  Knowing that I don't know it all.

What’s your yoga story?  How did you start practicing?
I started practicing yoga about five years ago as a means of cross training for a half-marathon, but it quickly became apparent that my yoga practice went beyond the benefits of a physical fitness routine.  I began to recognize that yoga was a means of reconnecting with myself and creating a grounding space for my mind.

If you had a superpower what would it be and why?
I used to always say that my superpower would be to control the weather because, well, it would make my job as a horticulturist super easy.  Recently, however, I realized that the weather is one thing that keeps us humble and requires us to accept the world just the way it is.  So, now my superpower would simply be to help everyone accept that we just can't control everything.

When I wake up in the morning, I always do these two things...
A) make a French press of coffee and B) drink it all.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
People are never perfect, but love can be.
